Course Description

Spanish II is the bridge between Spanish I and Spanish III.  Spanish II students will review Spanish I material in addition to learning more complex grammatical topics and vocabulary in order to grow in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Grammar topics will include the present progressive, affirmative tú commands, reflexive verbs, preterite, and imperfect.  Focus will also be given to the culture of Spanish speaking countries. 
The Spanish II curriculum includes the following 5 units:
  • Unit 1: ¡Revisamos! (Let’s Review)  Students will review material from Spanish I.  Students are expected to come to Spanish II with a mastery of this material. 
  • Unit 2: Tu día escolar (School)  Students will discuss their school day and after school activities.  Students will review how to conjugate stem-changing verbs.  Students will learn the difference between two verbs that means the same thing in Spanish.
  • Unit 3: Un evento especial (Special Event)  Students will discuss preparations for a special event including going shopping for the event. Students will learn how to conjugate the past tense (preterite) of regular verbs in Spanish. Students will also learn the meaning of reflexive verbs and be able to conjugate them in the past (preterite) and present tense.
  • Unit 4: Tú y tu comunidad (You and your community)  Students will discuss themselves and their communities. Students will be able to talk about places in their community and give directions in Spanish. Students will learn to conjugate irregular verbs in the past tense (preterite) and continue to practice with regular verbs in the preterite. Students will learn to give commands and use the present progressive. Students will learn direct object pronouns.
  • Unit 5: Recuerdos del pasado (Remembering the past)  Students will discuss their childhood and holidays or celebrations. Students will learn to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the past tense (imperfect).

Course Goals: Students will have mastery of all basic foundational skills in Spanish and will master all new skills taught!
Accomplishing this goal will mean:
  • Studying hard to memorize ALL vocabulary on reference lists.
  • Narrating a story or having conversations for at least three minutes in Spanish.
  • Reading excerpts from authentic Spanish texts.
  • Mastering a minimum of 80% of all objectives on tests/quizzes.
