Course Description
Spanish I is an introductory course that will prepare students to succeed in Spanish II and III, and at the college level. Spanish I will also prepare students for basic interactions with Spanish speakers in everyday situations. Students will acquire listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills through units centered on real-life issues and themes. The course has a strong cultural focus and includes regular lessons on Spanish-speaking cultures.

The Spanish I Curriculum contains four units:
- Unit 1 – Los fundamentos (The fundamentals): Students will be able to articulate and follow class procedures, systems, and rules. Students will be able to express course goals and reasons to learn Spanish. Students will be able to identify Spanish speaking countries as well as the origin of the Spanish language and culture. Students will be able to produce basic words and sentences in Spanish with an understanding of Spanish pronunciation.
- Unit 2 – La vida escolar (School life): Students will be able to tell discuss their classes, schedules, and opinions of those things. They will also learn to talk about what they do during and after school using AR verbs. They will be able to describe the materials they use in their classes as well as the location of those materials using the verb estar and prepositions.
- Unit 3 – Mi familia (My family): Students will be able to carry on basic conversations about others. Students will be able to describe other people physically as well as describe their personality characteristics, their age, birthday, place of origin, etc. They will be able to name their family members and discuss their family relationships.
- Unit 4 – Mi mundo (My world): Students will be able to talk about their leisure activities and the places they go to in the community. They will discuss why they go there, how often they go there, and with whom. Students will learn how to ask questions and extend, decline, and accept invitations to events.

Accomplishing this goal will mean:
- Studying hard to memorize ALL vocabulary on reference lists.
- Narrating a story or having conversations for at least one minute in Spanish.
- Reading excerpts from authentic Spanish texts.
- Mastering a minimum of 80% of all objectives on tests/quizzes.
